A muntjac deer was rescued after getting trapped inside an escalator at a Marks & Spencer store in Norwich city centre.

The unusual incident happened on Tuesday evening at the store on Rampant Horse Street. Staff quickly closed the entrance while rescuers worked to help the frightened animal, who has since been nicknamed Lucy.

According to Hillside Animal Sanctuary, Lucy had become stuck in a tight space between the escalator and a glass panel. Rescuer Ian Hayward was able to free her carefully from the narrow gap and take her to the sanctuary.

Thankfully, Lucy only suffered minor injuries.

Wendy Valentine, the founder of Hillside Animal Sanctuary, described the rescue as a memorable one. Staff at the shop also acted quickly to keep the deer as calm as possible until help arrived.

No one knows exactly how Lucy ended up inside the store. Sanctuary staff believe she may have wandered into the busy city centre and become frightened before finding her way into Marks & Spencer.

Lucy is now recovering safely at Hillside Animal Sanctuary. Because muntjac deer are considered a non-native species in the UK, she will remain at the sanctuary permanently rather than being released back into the wild.
