βThey are hilarious! Just giant field puppies.β
A few years ago, Sasha, her brother Dutch, and Sashaβs daughter Shelby were just part of a cattle herd on a Texas ranch, seen as livestock rather than individuals with their own lives and personalities.
Then their story took a very different turn.
According to Alli, cofounder of The Zend: Final Farm & Sanctuary in Justin, Texas, the rancher and his wife made a major life change after spending years in the cattle business. They became vegan and decided to send their entire herd to sanctuary instead of continuing ranching as usual.
That decision gave Sasha, Dutch, and Shelby a chance at a completely new life. Not long after arriving at The Zend, Sasha gave birth to a calf named Duncan. Together, the four joined nearly 100 other rescued farm animals living at the sanctuary.
With time, their individual personalities began to stand out.

Alli said rescuing this little longhorn family has been especially meaningful, and that the animals are loved on and interacted with every day. Far from distant or intimidating, she describes them as giant babies who especially enjoy chin scratches and affection.
Now the family spends its days peacefully grazing across the sanctuaryβs open pasture. But life there is not just calm and quiet β it also includes moments of pure excitement.
One of their biggest thrills comes from something surprisingly ordinary: the garbage truck.
From their field, the longhorns can spot the truck whenever it arrives to empty the sanctuaryβs trash bins, and they have apparently become huge fans of the event.
Alli said they often run and buck alongside the truck, watching with total fascination as the dumpsters are emptied. She joked that they act like oversized puppies in a field.

Even the sanitation workers enjoy the routine and love seeing how excited the longhorns get when they pull up.
No one knows exactly why the truck is so entertaining to them, but it has clearly become one of their favorite parts of the day.
It is likely they never had the chance to enjoy carefree moments like that back when they lived on the ranch. But at The Zend, even something as simple as a garbage pickup has become a reason to run, play, and celebrate being alive.
