“He’s a spicy little guy!”

Earlier this month, Katrina Niesen was getting ready to take her dog Luna out for a morning walk when a burst of strange noises from the porch made her stop immediately.

She heard hissing and loud clacking and, at first, feared a coyote might be outside, since coyotes are common in her neighborhood. Startled, she rushed back inside, left Luna safely there, and then carefully returned to see what was causing the commotion.

What she found was definitely wild — but much smaller than expected.

When Katrina slowly opened the door again, she discovered a baby owl perched on her porch, staring right back at her with wide, startled eyes. The little bird made it very clear that he was not interested in being disturbed, hissing and snapping his beak as if he had officially claimed the space for himself.

Katrina’s family already knew that two adult owls lived nearby, but they had not realized those owls had a youngster old enough to start venturing out of the nest and resting on his own during the day.

She ended up giving the tiny visitor a fitting name: Little Hootie.

The unexpected guest quickly became a source of joy for the whole family. Katrina, who is known online as The Sourdough Mama for her detailed 3D bread art on Instagram, was so enchanted by the little owl that she shared his visit with her followers instead of her usual baking content.

Little Hootie stayed on the porch for about three days, while his parents regularly stopped by to feed him and check on him. Katrina said the family could watch him through their sliding doors as they went about their day, and the experience felt peaceful and strangely special, almost as if they had become temporary babysitters.

So inspired by the owl, Katrina even made one of her signature artistic loaves of bread in his honor. She said she has always loved owls, which made the encounter even more meaningful.

Since then, Little Hootie has begun spending more time elsewhere as his parents continue helping him grow more independent. Katrina and her family have seen him practicing flight and resting in nearby trees.

Although they do not see him as often now, the days he spent right outside their door left a lasting impression. For Katrina, the whole experience felt magical and unforgettable.
