“It was a beautiful gesture.”

Late one night last week, a security camera inside a small Brazilian café recorded a moment of quiet kindness that has since captured hearts far beyond the town where it happened.

Just after 11:30 p.m., a familiar neighborhood dog wandered into Mister Lanches in Patrocínio, where owner Reinaldo Cortes was standing behind the counter. Instead of barking or begging, the dog gently reached out with his paw, calmly asking for attention.

“He came up and touched my leg,” Cortes told local station Difusora 98. “The first thing I thought was that he might be feeling lonely. I just felt like I needed to hug him.”

The camera footage shows Cortes doing exactly that — wrapping the dog in a long, comforting embrace.

The pup, named Tody, leaned in completely, clearly soaking up the affection. Cortes said the moment felt meaningful, and he even whispered a quiet prayer for the dog’s well-being.

“I asked God to protect him,” Cortes said. “I told him that if he ever needed me, I’d be there.”

Although Tody doesn’t belong to just one household, he’s far from alone. Residents throughout the community help look after him, making sure he’s fed, cared for medically and never short on company.

“He’s everyone’s dog,” Cortes said. “The whole city loves him.”

Tody is a regular at the café, often stopping by during lunchtime for a bite to eat. But that late-night visit was different.

“He didn’t come for food,” Cortes explained. “He just wanted affection. He came looking for love.”

While Tody prefers to roam freely among the people who care for him, Cortes already considers him family. And if the dog ever decided to settle down for good, the café owner says he’d be welcomed with open arms.

“He’s very important to me now,” Cortes said. “I’ll always look out for him. Tody has a special place in my heart.”
