โ€œHe was maybe 15 minutes away from dying.โ€

When a powerful storm rolled through Yorkshire, England, last month, it sent a tiny baby pigeon tumbling out of his nest and onto the hard ground below. The little bird lay motionless on the pavement โ€” so still that a woman walking her dog thought he hadnโ€™t survived.

Just to be sure, she bent down for a closer look โ€” and was shocked to see a faint sign of life. The chick was cold, soaked, and barely breathing, but he was hanging on.

With nothing else on hand, the woman gently wrapped the fragile bird in a dog waste bag to keep him warm and hurried to Forest Flock Pigeon Sanctuary for help.

When Stephanie Miller, who runs the sanctuary, first saw the tiny bird, she didnโ€™t think heโ€™d make it through the hour.

โ€œHe was maybe 15 minutes from dying, if that,โ€ Miller told The Dodo.

Still, she refused to give up. She placed him on a heating pad, supplied oxygen, and named him Loki โ€” a fitting name for a little trickster who refused to quit.

Then, something amazing happened.

After a few hours, Lokiโ€™s breathing steadied. His temperature climbed. And finally, his eyes fluttered open.

โ€œIโ€™ve never seen anything like it,โ€ Miller said.

Over the next few days, Miller worked tirelessly to rehydrate Loki and feed him a special formula. Slowly but surely, he began to grow stronger โ€” and sassier.

Within weeks, the once near-death pigeon had gained weight, lost his fuzzy yellow down, and sprouted sleek new feathers.

โ€œHeโ€™s very cheeky,โ€ Miller said. โ€œHe squeaks for food at 5:30 a.m. and loves to poke his beak in my ear.โ€

Soon, Loki will graduate to the outdoor aviary, where heโ€™ll learn from the adult pigeons how to forage and fly. If all goes well, heโ€™ll be ready for release in the spring โ€” something Miller admits will be bittersweet.

โ€œIโ€™ve become so attached,โ€ she said. โ€œWhen I first saw him, I thought he wouldnโ€™t make it. My heart went out to him.โ€

Recently, the woman who first found Loki stopped by to visit โ€” and she was stunned by the transformation.

โ€œHeโ€™s incredible,โ€ Miller said. โ€œHeโ€™s got the fight of Rocky.โ€

From a soaked, lifeless hatchling to a spirited young bird, Lokiโ€™s journey is nothing short of miraculous โ€” proof that even the smallest fighters can rise again.
