Fond Memories of Queenie: The Talkative Budgie

In the late 1980s, Queenie, the beloved budgerigar, enchanted the household with her uncanny imitations of everyday sounds. The trill of the rotary dial telephone, barking dogs, and family members calling out were all part of her repertoire. Despite the occasional “Shut up, Queenie!” when household members were engrossed in watching TV or playing Monopoly, Queenie’s magical presence was cherished.

Initially believed to be a female due to the pale pink cere above her beak, Queenie surprised everyone when the color turned blue, indicating a male budgie. This unexpected transformation only added to her allure. What made Queenie truly special was her eagerness to interact with the human members of the family. Attempts to teach her to say “Merry Christmas” resulted in comedic timing as she mastered it just when the decorations were being taken down.

Beyond imitating human speech, Queenie displayed an endearing dance routine when prompted. The family’s rhythmic chirrups and finger circles led to Queenie fluffing up, joining in the chorus, and performing a delightful birdie dance. The mystery of whether she thought her reflection in the mirror was another bird added to her beguiling nature.

Queenie was not just a home companion; she accompanied the family on holidays throughout the UK. Unfazed by travel, she enjoyed nibbling on cuttlefish bones and relished chickweed salads sourced by her dedicated human family members.

The moments when Queenie was allowed to fly freely at home were cherished. Landing on heads and shoulders, she displayed a peculiar fascination with cleaning Mum’s ears using her stone-like tongue. The routine of cleaning Queenie’s cage and arranging her toys, including colored plastic hoops and a mirror with a bell, became a source of joy for her human caretakers.

Tragically, one day, Queenie passed away suddenly. The vacuuming happening at the time raised concerns that it might have contributed to her demise. The family buried her at the end of the garden, marking the spot with a wooden cross. Closure came years later when it was revealed that the family dog had been involved in her passing. The details remain hazy, leaving a sense of regret for not properly understanding the circumstances surrounding Queenie’s untimely end.

To Queenie, wherever she may be, a heartfelt apology is extended for any unintentional neglect and the occasional exclamation of “Shut up!”
