βThe poor thing ran back toward her …”
While hiking in Riverside County Regional Park in California, animal lover Jess Estrada witnessed something sheβll never forget: a woman pulled over at the top of the trail, got out of her car β and cruelly tossed a cat into the bushes.
βThe poor thing ran back toward her, and she grabbed it β only to throw it again,β Estrada shared on Instagram. βI was in complete shock.β
A Shocking Abandonment
Rushing over to help, Estrada discovered a senior cat, later named Joey, trembling in the brush and crying out for help. Confused and terrified, he clung to the only person willing to protect him.
βI contacted Animal Control and connected with an incredible Riverside Park Ranger named Jay,β Estrada said. βShe was kind, compassionate and immediately jumped into action.β

The rangers confirmed what Estrada already knew β Joey wouldnβt have survived long in the wild. Between coyotes and snakes, his chances were slim. Together, they gently placed him into a cat carrier and brought him to safety.
From Abandonment to Adoption
At the shelter, Joey received care and comfort while he waited for a new family. Estrada visited him a month later to check in, sharing a sweet update:

βHe is ready to be adopted. Look at how cute he is!β
Though Estrada couldnβt adopt Joey herself, she made sure he knew he was loved. Joey seemed to remember her right away β and greeted her with pure joy.
Not long after, Joeyβs luck turned around. A loving adopter saw what a special cat he was and gave him the forever home he deserved.
A Message That Matters
For Estrada, seeing Joey tossed away like trash was heartbreaking, but helping him reach his happy ending made all the difference.
βTo whoever reads this: animals are not disposable,β Estrada said. βPlease speak up when you see something wrong. You might be the only chance they have.β
Thanks to one hikerβs quick action and the compassion of park rangers, Joeyβs story went from tragedy to triumph β proof that every voice matters when it comes to saving animals in need.
