He got a crown and a cake π
When Chrissy Elder walked into Charlotteβs Animal Care and Control, she immediately noticed an old dog struggling on the shelterβs slick floors. His name was Sammy, and with his gray muzzle and weary eyes, Elder knew he wouldnβt survive long in such a stressful place.
Sammyβs family had brought him in to surrender, but as the founder of Forgotten, Now Family Rescue (FNF), Elder couldnβt bear the thought of him spending his final years alone in a kennel.
βHe was so weak and had trouble walking β¦ and he had visible masses on his body,β Elder said. βI just couldnβt let him disappear into the back of the shelter.β

So, Elder stepped in. After speaking with his family, Sammy was officially entrusted to her care β and Elder promised him that the rest of his life would be filled with comfort and love.
True to her word, within just two days, Elder found Sammy a perfect foster home β a family experienced with senior dogs who could give him the gentle care he needed. Sammy adjusted beautifully, soaking up affection and relishing soft beds, warm blankets, and patient hands that treated him like royalty.

His new family even threw him a sweet 16th birthday party fit for a king. Dressed in a crown and seated in front of a special cake and oversized treats, Sammy enjoyed his big day surrounded by love. He may have gone to town on the snacks, but the real gift was simply being celebrated β not forgotten.
Senior dogs like Sammy often face uncertain futures when surrendered, but rescues like FNF, Vintage Fur, Rainbow Bridge Hospice Rescue, and Crisis Dogs NCβs Seniors for Seniors Program are proving that every gray muzzle deserves dignity and happiness in their golden years.

βAt FNF, we believe every dog deserves joy every single day,β Elder said. βSammy gave his family 15 years of love. He deserved to be celebrated.β
Now, thanks to Elder and her network of fosters, Sammy can rest easy β his twilight years filled not with loneliness, but with soft beds, full hearts, and unconditional love.
