In the wake of the devastating floods in Central Texas this week, heartbreak and loss have touched thousands. Over 90 lives have been lost, and many survivors are now left homeless, grieving, and trying to rebuild.
Among the forgotten victims of the disaster are displaced pets — now wandering through debris-strewn neighborhoods, searching for their families. One of them, a sweet dog named Superman, was found huddled in a pile of wreckage, silently waiting for a miracle.
Tragically, Superman’s person didn’t survive the storm. Alone and heartbroken, his chances of survival were slim.
When local search and rescue crews spotted Superman’s desperate, fearful face, they knew they had to help. At first, he was too afraid to approach them — aching and traumatized after being swept away from his home. But with time, patience, and gentle reassurance, Superman began to trust again.
“Fearful and aching after being swept away from his home, Superman was hesitant to trust the search and rescue crews,” Texas rescue group Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) shared in a Facebook post. “With patience and a bit of dog-whispering, volunteers were finally able to earn his trust and safely remove Superman from the scene.”
Once rescued, Superman was brought to APA!’s medical team for a full evaluation. Soon after, volunteers reached out to his surviving family members — loved ones who were mourning deeply and had lost everything but this last connection to their past.
“His surviving family, now grieving and having lost everything, are doing everything they can to hold on to the last piece of their past that remains — Superman,” APA! wrote.
Though they’re not yet ready to take him back, the family is determined to reunite with him once they’re able. In the meantime, Superman is safe with an experienced foster parent who’s giving him all the love and care he needs until he can go home again.
Thanks to the dedication of rescue crews, volunteers, and donors, Superman has a second chance — and a future filled with hope.
