“I’m glad we listened …”
What began as a peaceful evening walk through Louisville, Kentucky, quickly turned into an unexpected rescue for Lukman O Nurudeen and his friend. Around 10 p.m., a strange, persistent sound coming from what appeared to be an empty parking lot caught their attention.
βAs we were walking, we heard a bird crying near a storm drain,β Nurudeen shared on TikTok. βAt first, it just sounded like background noise β but it kept going. Then, the bird flew toward us and back to the drain, still crying.β
Something about the birdβs behavior struck Nurudeen as unusual β almost like a call for help. So, they followed her lead.
βWe approached the drain, looked inside β and there it was,β Nurudeen wrote. A tiny baby bird had fallen into the grate, trapped and helpless.
Walking away didnβt feel like an option. βIt just didnβt feel right to leave,β Nurudeen said. βSo we decided to take the risk.β
Carefully, they reached in and rescued the chick, placing it gently back near its waiting mother. In that quiet moment, Nurudeen noticed a subtle shift.
βShe stood there, no longer crying β just still,β he said. βIt felt peaceful, like she was saying thank you.β
The birds, believed to be killdeers, were finally back together. Nurudeen was grateful theyβd heard the motherβs cries and answered them in time.
βA motherβs love is powerful β in every species,β he reflected. βLoud, relentless, and fierce. Iβm just glad we paid attention. We did something good tonight, and it matters.β
