After winning one of the top literary prizes last year for his children’s book “The Eyes & The Impossible,” Dave Eggers has a sequel set for this fall
Dave Eggers Announces Sequel to Award-Winning Children’s Novel “The Eyes & The Impossible”
NEW YORK — Fans of Johannes, the free dog with a poetic soul, have a reason to celebrate: Dave Eggers is returning to the world of his beloved children’s book The Eyes & The Impossible with a sequel set for release on November 18.
Titled The Eyes, The Fire, & The Avalanche Kingdom, the upcoming novel continues the whimsical and wild adventures of Johannes and his companions — Helene the goat and Bertrand the seagull — as they face new mysteries and, intriguingly, opossums.
Illustrated once again by Shawn Harris, the book promises the same rich, visual storytelling that enchanted readers the first time around.
“I was sure The Eyes & The Impossible was a once-in-a-lifetime book,” said editor Melanie Nolan of Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers. “So I was very, very happy to be proven wrong.”
Eggers’ first book in the series earned the 2024 Newbery Medal, placing him among the most celebrated contemporary children’s authors. Known for adult bestsellers like A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius and A Hologram for the King, Eggers has shown remarkable versatility across genres — and now, across species.
In addition to the hardcover release from Knopf, Eggers’ nonprofit publisher McSweeney’s will issue a special woodbound edition, continuing their tradition of crafting books as collectible art objects.
If The Eyes, The Fire, & The Avalanche Kingdom is anything like its predecessor, readers of all ages are in for a wild, philosophical, and deeply funny ride.
