Benji’s Second Chance: From Abandonment to New Beginnings
In early March, on a quiet street in Surprise, Arizona, a tiny dog named Benji found himself heartlessly abandoned. Security cameras captured the gut-wrenching moment when he was tossed from a car and left behind, chasing after it as it sped away.
Benji was confused, scared, and heartbroken, but little did he know, his story was about to take a turn for the better.
A Good Samaritan witnessed the abandonment and quickly scooped Benji up, bringing him to the Surprise Police Department for safety. There, the sweet pup won over the hearts of everyone, his infectious energy and lovable personality making him an instant favorite.
“He immediately gravitated towards men, women, and everybody in the department,” said Sergeant Rick Hernandez of the Surprise Police Department. “Lots of tail wags, lots of belly rubs, and lots of smiles from our staff.”
Despite his rough start in life, Benji thrived in his new environment. He was full of energy, playful, and loved interacting with the staff. After being vaccinated, microchipped, and neutered, Benji was officially ready to find his forever home — but the Surprise Police Department had other plans.
Benji had captured the hearts of the officers so deeply that one of them decided to adopt him. Now, Benji is not just a beloved pup, but an official member of the Surprise Police Department family.
“We’re really going to allow Benji to dictate how he’s going to support not only our officers, but our community,” Hernandez said.
With training sessions donated by Steady Hand Dog Training, Benji will continue to grow into the best version of himself. His new extended family is committed to him, and they can’t wait to watch him thrive. And who knows — maybe one day, Benji will be the department’s furry ambassador, bringing smiles to the community and offering comfort to those in need.
“There’s bring your kids to work day — this is gonna be bring Benji to work any and every day,” Hernandez added with a laugh.
Now safe, loved, and with a future full of tail wags ahead, Benji is a reminder that sometimes, life has a way of turning around — and that every dog deserves a second chance at love.
