β€œIt was terrifying to witness …”

Kitten Saved from Perilous Ledge on Brooklyn-Queens Expressway

In early January 2025, just before sunset, the team at Greenpoint Cats received an urgent message from a Good Samaritan named Jacob. He had discovered a young black-and-white kitten perched precariously on the edge of the 50-foot Brooklyn-Queens Expressway in New York City, surrounded by danger on all sides.

The kitten had been stranded there for six hours, with traffic whizzing by on one side and a steep drop into more traffic on the other. It was a terrifying situation for everyone involved.

As Greenpoint Cats rushed to the scene, a crowd of concerned citizens began to gather below, offering support. Local volunteers, including two from Puppy Kitty NYC, helped manage the scene, with cars parked to divert traffic. The situation was tense, but hope was on the horizon as NYPD officers and firefighters arrived quickly to assist.

The Daring Rescue

Among the responders was Officer Hernandez, a cat lover from Brooklyn’s 94th Precinct, who came up with a creative rescue plan. Using a large dog carrier, he was able to gently push Perry off the ledge and into the safety of the carrier, securing her just in time.

Though Perry was initially bewildered by the ordeal, she was soon receiving belly rubs from her rescuers, overjoyed to be safe.

A Long Road to Trust

Perry was taken into the care of Puppy Kitty NYC, who hoped to find her a loving home. But Perry, having spent time on the streets, was wary of humans and reluctant to be touched. It took a dedicated team to help her build trust.

After months of patient care, including some gentle coaxing from Alyssa from Adoptables NYC, Perry started to relax, showing signs of progress and eventually allowing herself to be petted again. β€œShe’s doing so well, allowing [people to pet her] and purring,” said Meagan from Puppy Kitty NYC.

Ready for Her Forever Home

Now, Perry is thriving and ready for adoption. She’s a shy but sweet kitten who is hoping to find a forever homeβ€”ideally with another young cat to play with.

Thanks to the unwavering support of her rescuers and a community of caring people, Perry’s journey from the edge of the expressway to a loving foster home is one of resilience and hope. She’s looking forward to meeting her perfect family soon.

Until then, Perry will continue to soak up the love from her foster mom, grateful for the many compassionate souls who stopped to help her that fateful evening.
