Photographer Rescues Drowning Duck After Unusual Plea from Her Friends
Sarah, known as @billowandmull on Instagram, has a talent for capturing the quiet beauty of nature. But during a recent bird-watching trip, she found herself at the center of an unexpected rescue.
While photographing a group of three ducks, Sarah noticed something unusual—one duck appeared lifeless, her head and neck limp on the water’s surface. The other two hovered close by, refusing to leave. Then, as they spotted Sarah, they did something remarkable.

“They started pushing their dead friend toward me and looking at me expectantly,” she shared in a video.
But as the duck drifted closer, Sarah saw something astonishing—her eye opened. The duck wasn’t dead; she was drowning.

“She was breathing in water but couldn’t move,” Sarah wrote.
A Quick-Thinking Rescue
Realizing the urgency, Sarah gently lifted the duck’s neck, allowing water to drain from her beak.

“We’re getting her head up … so she can breathe,” she narrates in a clip taken at the time.
Sarah waited as the duck slowly regained her strength.
“She pushed out all the water she’d taken in,” Sarah wrote. “She composed herself until she felt better.”

A Heartwarming Farewell
Finally, the duck was strong enough to continue. Though still wobbly, she wasn’t alone—her loyal friends remained by her side.
“Her heroes were behind her to give support,” Sarah wrote. “They stayed by her side as they swam away.”
Sarah’s incredible footage not only captured a breathtaking moment of survival but also highlighted the deep bonds animals share—even in life’s most fragile moments.
