โ€œHe is always tracking people with his eyes, eager to get any small amount of attention.โ€

Deuce: The Sweet Pittie Who Just Needs a Chance

At the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast (HSTC), visitors will come across many lovable dogs hoping for a forever home. But one dog, Deuce, isnโ€™t front and center like the rest.

Why? Itโ€™s not because Deuce doesnโ€™t want attentionโ€”he loves it! But the busy adoption floor can sometimes be noisy and overwhelming, so Deuce prefers the quieter back kennels.

However, donโ€™t think for a moment that this means heโ€™s not eager to be noticed.

โ€œDeuce almost always has his paws up on the cage,โ€ said Sarah Fisher, communications manager at HSTC. โ€œHe is always tracking people with his eyes, eager to get any small amount of attention.โ€

A Tough Start

Deuce first arrived at the shelter in September of last year, abandoned by his owner. He was quickly adopted in November, but his new home wasnโ€™t meant to last. After just a month, his adopter’s health declined, and Deuce found himself back at HSTC, looking for a second chance.

When he returned, he didnโ€™t hide his excitement.

โ€œWhen he was surrendered to us the second time, Deuce jumped up on the counter and greeted everyone while they were sitting at their computers,โ€ Fisher recalled. โ€œIt was quite a sight.โ€

A Heart as Big as His Personality

In his kennel, Deuce is calm and loving, with eyes that seem to melt your heart. But when itโ€™s time to go outside, that calm demeanor disappears. Outside the kennel, Deuce is a full-grown puppyโ€”rambunctious, energetic, and full of life. This energy has made potential adopters hesitate.

โ€œWhen people visit him, he is calm and loving, but gets extremely rambunctious when taken out of the kennel,โ€ Fisher explained. โ€œUnfortunately, his visitors werenโ€™t ready for the commitment that comes with training him, so they decided against adopting him.โ€

Despite this, the shelter staff has been amazing in helping Deuce. He gets long walks several times a day, training sessions in the agility field, and off-leash playtime in the yards. And Deuce loves enrichment puzzles that keep his mind engaged.

A Diamond in the Rough

Deuce isnโ€™t just playful; heโ€™s also trainable and eager to please.

โ€œOur lead trainer, Heidi Fischer, says that Deuce would thrive in a home that can provide daily exercise and leash training,โ€ Fisher shared. โ€œHe has great engagement with treats and is very trainable. He loves walking on a leash with a toy in his mouth.โ€

Deuceโ€™s trainability and affection are clear, and heโ€™s making great progress under the shelterโ€™s guidance. But what he really needs now is a family who will see his potential and be willing to invest in the time and love he so deserves.

โ€œDeuce is an extremely loyal dog,โ€ Fisher said. โ€œWe are hoping that somebody will see his potential like we do.โ€
