“He is always tracking people with his eyes, eager to get any small amount of attention.”

Deuce: The Sweet Pittie Who Just Needs a Chance

At the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast (HSTC), visitors will come across many lovable dogs hoping for a forever home. But one dog, Deuce, isn’t front and center like the rest.

Why? It’s not because Deuce doesn’t want attention—he loves it! But the busy adoption floor can sometimes be noisy and overwhelming, so Deuce prefers the quieter back kennels.

However, don’t think for a moment that this means he’s not eager to be noticed.

“Deuce almost always has his paws up on the cage,” said Sarah Fisher, communications manager at HSTC. “He is always tracking people with his eyes, eager to get any small amount of attention.”

A Tough Start

Deuce first arrived at the shelter in September of last year, abandoned by his owner. He was quickly adopted in November, but his new home wasn’t meant to last. After just a month, his adopter’s health declined, and Deuce found himself back at HSTC, looking for a second chance.

When he returned, he didn’t hide his excitement.

“When he was surrendered to us the second time, Deuce jumped up on the counter and greeted everyone while they were sitting at their computers,” Fisher recalled. “It was quite a sight.”

A Heart as Big as His Personality

In his kennel, Deuce is calm and loving, with eyes that seem to melt your heart. But when it’s time to go outside, that calm demeanor disappears. Outside the kennel, Deuce is a full-grown puppy—rambunctious, energetic, and full of life. This energy has made potential adopters hesitate.

“When people visit him, he is calm and loving, but gets extremely rambunctious when taken out of the kennel,” Fisher explained. “Unfortunately, his visitors weren’t ready for the commitment that comes with training him, so they decided against adopting him.”

Despite this, the shelter staff has been amazing in helping Deuce. He gets long walks several times a day, training sessions in the agility field, and off-leash playtime in the yards. And Deuce loves enrichment puzzles that keep his mind engaged.

A Diamond in the Rough

Deuce isn’t just playful; he’s also trainable and eager to please.

“Our lead trainer, Heidi Fischer, says that Deuce would thrive in a home that can provide daily exercise and leash training,” Fisher shared. “He has great engagement with treats and is very trainable. He loves walking on a leash with a toy in his mouth.”

Deuce’s trainability and affection are clear, and he’s making great progress under the shelter’s guidance. But what he really needs now is a family who will see his potential and be willing to invest in the time and love he so deserves.

“Deuce is an extremely loyal dog,” Fisher said. “We are hoping that somebody will see his potential like we do.”
