“We couldn’t let her have her babies alone on the cold street” 😰
When Suzette Hall, founder and director of Logan’s Legacy 29, received an urgent call from a concerned Los Angeles resident, her heart sank. The caller described a small dog who had been wandering the neighborhood for months, recently showing a noticeable and worrisome weight gain.
Hall soon learned more about the dog’s difficult past.
“She’d been living on the streets since August,” Hall shared in a Facebook post. “She would sit right in the middle of the road, narrowly avoiding being hit by cars multiple times.”
Despite the best efforts of local residents, the frightened pup evaded capture time and time again.
“Everyone tried to help her,” Hall wrote. “But she was so scared—she just ran away whenever anyone approached.”
As months went by, the neighbors noticed her belly steadily growing. Suspecting she was pregnant, they knew they had to act quickly to save her and her unborn puppies from the harsh conditions of street life. That’s when they contacted Hall for help.
“We couldn’t let her have her babies alone on the cold street,” Hall said.
Hall wasted no time and rushed to the neighborhood with her friend, Hilary Klein, who offered to assist. When they arrived, they found the dog, later named Frita, scavenging for food in desperation.
“The poor mama was starving, eating whatever scraps she could find,” Hall said.
Although it was heartbreaking to see Frita in such dire need, Hall used her hunger to lure her into a trap. With a can of enticing food, she set the bait and hoped for the best.
Frita’s reaction was almost immediate.
“She’d bolt if anyone looked at her, but as soon as I opened the can, she froze,” Hall recalled. “Slowly, she started moving toward the trap.”
Within minutes, Frita was safely contained. The relief among Hall, Klein, and the neighbors was palpable.
“She no longer had to be alone, unwanted, or risk giving birth on the streets,” Hall said. “This mama was finally rescued and warm.”
Frita was taken to foster care through Second Leash On Life, where she settled into her new environment with her foster mom, Alix Levy Smith. For the first time in months, she experienced the comfort of a soft bed and a warm home.
Just days later, Frita gave her foster mom a heartwarming Thanksgiving surprise: five healthy puppies—four boys and one girl.
“She delivered her babies the night before Thanksgiving,” Hall shared in an update. “They’re now safe and thriving.”
Frita and her adorable pups are continuing to grow and bond in foster care. Soon, they’ll all be ready for adoption through Second Leash On Life. For now, the little family is relishing their peaceful days together, experiencing love and comfort for the first time.
“Sweet mama, your family is absolutely beautiful,” Hall wrote.
